The East Kolkata Wetlands, a sprawling expanse of forgotten haven lies nestled near the Salt Lake urban hub. These wetlands, recognized by Ramsar as a wetland of international importance, are a self-sustained biological wastewater treatment plant – quietly channeling the city’s waste on a daily basis into fish feed, and producing tonnes of vegetables and fish in its wake.
In Part I of a journey to explore this ecological wonder, we make our rounds of the Topsia and Banatala Lock Gate while our guide for the day, Dhruba Dasgupta – a tireless crusader for the wetlands, explains the nuances of the complex yet seamless network of canals that comprise the city’s intricate sewage system.
